This year may be different, but the best gift you can give to yourself and others is to socially distance, mask up & stay home for the holidays! 😷🦠🎁

Charles Island history...have you ever been to the Charles Island history...have you ever been to the island?

In 1855 the lone house on Charles Island became a summer resort hotel. Resting in the middle of the island about 50 feet above low-tide, it’s charms included a beautiful location, delightful scenery, and excellent fishing, bathing, and boating. The hotel was also relatively easy to access. At low tide, a causeway would open that allowed carriages and wagons to access the mainland. Visitors could arrive by train and reach the hotel either by carriage or by boat. Excursions from New Haven also allowed day trippers from Hartford to spend a summer day on Long Island Sound. But the days of Charles Island as a trendy resort location were short-lived. It’s reputation as a wholesome family resort began to decline and the hotel closed. By 1868, a fertilizer factory on the island produced a prodigious stench that led to complaints from residents on the mainland.

In the years that followed, the island remained largely uninhabited, but still managed to host the occasional visitor. Numerous plans for the island came and went. In 1904, developers considered Charles Island as a possible site for an amusement park and when America entered WWI in 1917, it was rumored that the U.S. government planned to erect a “powerful wireless station” and to protect Bridgeport and neighboring towns from enemy submarines. Eventually, the State of Connecticut acquired the island and opened it as part of Silver Sands State Park in 1960.

Today, Charles Island is maintained by the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and is the site of a large heron and egret rookery.
